Yahoo! Music provides Internet radio, music downloads, a music subscription service, music videos, artist features, music news, and the Yahoo! Music Engine, a downloadable music client. To use most features of Yahoo! Music and the Music Engine, you will need to be a registered Yahoo! user.
Information Collection and Use Practices
-
Yahoo! collects information when you use Yahoo! Music services such as LAUNCHcast radio or Music Engine and when you take certain actions like rating songs, artists, and videos. We keep track of your settings and ratings for several reasons, including to better understand your music preferences, customize certain content, recommend music to purchase or play, and to provide our services.
-
- Yahoo! Music Engine
- The Yahoo! Music Engine automatically checks for updates to Yahoo! software.
- The Yahoo! Music Engine sends information about each of your sessions to help us identify issues, evaluate how our program is used, and provide our services. Such information may include the following: version number; unique identifier numbers that allow us to distinguish between different computers and different people using the Music Engine, Yahoo! ID, duration of session time; number of times you download a song.
- The Yahoo! Music Engine may send additional information to better understand your music preferences, personalize certain content, recommend music to purchase or listen to, allow you to rate songs, share playlists, and to automatically identify what CD is in your computer. Information sent may include the song playing, your playlists, and what CD is in your drive.
- The Music Engine has an integrated web browser experience and uses Yahoo! cookies set through Internet Explorer to provide services tied to your Yahoo! ID such as ratings and customizing certain content.
- You may purchase individual songs or subscribe to Yahoo! Music Unlimited, our on-demand music service. When you do, you will be asked to establish a Yahoo! Wallet to process payments.
Information Sharing and Disclosure Practices
-
Music Profile
- A music profile identified by your Yahoo! ID will be created for you if you rate music or create a customized LAUNCHcast radio station.
- By default, your music profile is public. It includes a description of your musical tastes, your ratings, followers and influencers, and lists of similar members. It will also link to your LAUNCHcast radio station.
- When you rate an artist, song, album, or genre, it will be added to your music profile.
- Community and Social Networking Features
- Yahoo! identifies users whose musical tastes are similar to each other and provides each user with a list of "similar members." Each person is listed by their Yahoo! ID and a link is provided to their music profile.
- Many artist, song, and album pages contain a "fans of" section that includes a list of select "fans" of that artist, song or album. You become a "fan" if you rate an item highly (4 or more stars or 90 and above). "Fans" are listed by their Yahoo! ID and a link is provided to their music profile.
- You may choose to make another user an influencer. That influencer will show up on your list of influencers and you will show on their list of followers. Similarly, other users can choose to make you an influencer. Yahoo! Music will recommend songs and albums that your influencers rate highly, and you will receive music on your LAUNCHcast radio station that your influencers like.
- Different sections of the Yahoo! web site and Music Engine, such as your music profile, enable other users to see your online status and send instant messages to you if you use Yahoo! Messenger. You can edit your preferences so that others do not see you online at any time.
- Listening to Music and Watching Videos (Yahoo! Music Engine and LAUNCHcast)
- By default, other users on your Yahoo! Messenger friends list may view and listen to the audio files in your collection when you use the Music Engine. You can turn this feature off in the Music Engine by choosing Edit > Preferences > Messenger Settings.
- When you are listening to a friend's collection or they are listening to yours, the Music Engine will sometimes use a direct connection between your two computers to stream the file. In such instances, your IP address is available to that friend.
- By default, your Messenger status message will be updated to show the song you are playing with the Music Engine or LAUNCHcast. The status message will change for the ID you are signed into Messenger with, even if you are not signed into the Music Engine, or if you are signed into the Music Engine and Messenger with different IDs.
- You can turn this feature off in the Music Engine by choosing Edit > Preferences > Messenger Settings.
- You can turn this feature off in Messenger by choosing Messenger > Preferences > Privacy.
- You can also turn this feature off in Messenger by choosing the status message selector and choosing a status message other than the song playing.
- Your LAUNCHcast station is available to other members of the Yahoo! community through a link on your music profile. Others may still listen to your LAUNCHcast station if you hide your music profile.
- For licencing reasons, we send designated third parties anonymous track information about the music you listen to through LAUNCHcast radio or Yahoo! Music Unlimited, or about videos that you watch. We may also send aggregated, non-identifiable information about our users' declared postal codes and gender to third parties.
- Yahoo! Music offers promotions that allow you to request information on a particular artist or sponsor. If you choose to receive information, your email address will be shared with the artist's representative or sponsor of the promotion. To learn how they use your information, please contact them directly. They are solely responsible for their use of this information.
- Yahoo! Music works with different artists and bands to provide official artist fan clubs on Yahoo! Music. If you join a fan club, your information, including email address, may be shared with the artist or band consistent with the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for each artist club. In addition, please note that some artist clubs require that you receive email as part of the club.
Practices Regarding Your Ability to Update or Delete Information
-
Billing
- To view, edit, or cancel Yahoo! premium services you have ordered, including Yahoo! Music Unlimited, please visit: https://billing.yahoo.com. It includes information about services you currently subscribe to, payment scheduling, and payment history.
- Music Profile
- You may choose to hide your music profile information from public view by clicking the 'hide profile' link at the top of your music profile.
- Your music profile may still be found by other users; however it will only contain a link for them to listen to your LAUNCHcast radio station.
- Your ratings, influencers, and followers will no longer be shown. If someone listens to your LAUNCHcast station they will know you rated something but not the actual rating.
- Hiding your music profile will also remove your Yahoo! ID from "fans of" and "similar members" lists.
- You may edit your ratings in a few different ways: view your music profile and click the 'Edit' button next to 'My Ratings'; visit an artist, album, or song page on the Yahoo! Music web site or Yahoo! Music Unlimited catalogue; or listen to a song in LAUNCHcast or the Music Engine while online.
- Community and Social Networking Features
- At this time, the only way not to be an influencer is to hide your music profile.
- Choosing to hide your profile will not remove you from other users' influencers or followers lists you may already be on, though it will stop additional users from adding you as an influencer.
- To remove another user as an influencer visit your "My Influencers" list through your music profile and click the "Remove" button next to that user's Yahoo! ID.
