You and Yahoo! Email

Yahoo! sends email to Yahoo! users for a number of reasons. The most common types of emails are listed below:

  • Yahoo! Marketing Communications
  • Yahoo! Newsletters
  • Yahoo! Product Information Updates
  • Yahoo! Service Announcements and Administrative Messages
  • Yahoo! Alerts
  • Jointly-provided emails
  • Third-party email service providers

We always try to make sure that you know what type of email you are receiving and why by placing this information at the bottom of every email we send out.

We also make it simple to stop any communication unless it is a message that we have to send to you (Service Announcements and Administrative Messages): unsubscribe information is also included in the bottom of our emails.

Yahoo! Marketing Communications

  • We may send emails marketing Yahoo! products and services or those jointly provided with Yahoo!. These emails may include special offers, product announcements, and other messages telling you about Yahoo! products and services or those provided jointly with Yahoo!.
  • These emails are sent only to registered Yahoo! users and we ask you when you register with Yahoo! whether you want to receive these communications from us or not.
  • You can edit your Yahoo! Marketing Communications preferences at any time to stop receiving these emails.
  • You can always unsubscribe (so you won’t receive any more emails) by clicking on the unsubscribe link or following the instructions at the bottom of each email.

Yahoo! Newsletters

  • Newsletters are emails that are sent regularly only to users who have asked to receive a particular newsletter: you can unsubscribe at any time either from the email itself or from your Preference Centre.
  • Click here to visit the Yahoo! Newsletters homepage for more information. You can get a reminder email containing a link to your Preference Centre if you are already signed up to one or more Newsletters
  • You can always unsubscribe (so you won’t receive any more emails) by clicking on the unsubscribe link or following the instructions at the bottom of each email.
  • Yahoo! Personals has a separate sign-up process for its newsletters. You can sign up or unsubscribe (link to personals) from these communications via Yahoo! Personals.
  • Please also note that some Yahoo! products or services may send Newsletters using a service provider: see the Jointly-provided emails section below

Yahoo! Product Updates

  • Some Yahoo! products and services require you to receive communications as part of using those services. You agree to receive these communications when you register for, use or purchase those services.
  • You can always unsubscribe (so you won’t receive any more emails) by clicking on the unsubscribe link or following the instructions at the bottom of each email.

Yahoo! Service Announcements and Administrative Messages

  • We send service announcement emails when we need to provide you with information that may affect your use of a product or service. For example, we may send a service announcement if there is a disruption of service, a change in price or a major change to a product.
  • We may automatically send administrative emails when you take certain actions such as changing your password. We may also send "welcome" messages that are informational and provide useful details about service activation or product usage instructions when you sign up for a Yahoo! account or begin using a particular Yahoo! service.
  • You cannot unsubscribe from service announcement, administrative or welcome emails.

Yahoo! Alerts

  • We may send Yahoo! Alerts if you are subscribed to receive them.
  • Yahoo! Alerts are personalised messages that notify you of relevant content via email, instant message or mobile phone. You must be a registered Yahoo! user in order to sign up to Yahoo! Alerts.
  • Visit http://alerts.yahoo.com to manage your alerts.

  • Please Note: Because many phone companies recycle phone numbers, it is possible for members who buy a new mobile phone to receive alerts subscribed to by the previous owner. Anyone can send a message to your phone number, so Yahoo! can only stop alerts that are managed by Yahoo!. Only your phone network can prevent other messages from being delivered to your phone.

Jointly Provided Emails

  • Some Yahoo! products or services may send you email communications provided jointly by service providers who run part of the product or service on our behalf
  • You can always unsubscribe (so you won’t receive any more emails) by clicking on the unsubscribe link or following the instructions at the bottom of each email.
  • We require our service providers to comply with all applicable Data Protection laws.

Third-party email service providers

  • Our email service providers may include web beacons in the HTML-formatted email messages (messages that include graphics) they send in order to determine which email messages were opened and to note whether a message was acted upon.
  • We do not permit these email service providers to have an independent right to use your personal information or to send you email.

Data Protection: local and EU law

  • We process and store your data according to the provisions of UK and EU data protection legislation.
