Yahoo! Labs Small World Experiment
TheYahoo! Labs Small World Experimentis designed to test the hypothesis that anyone in the world can get a message to anyone else in just "six degrees of separation". In order to carry out this Experiment, we will collect personal information from ‘Targets’ and ‘Senders’ to make connections between them.
If you agree to participate in the Experiment, you agree to provide Yahoo! Labs and our partners (including Facebook) with certain personal information in order to understand these connections.
You may terminate participation in the Project by deleting the Small World application from your Facebook privacy settings AND by clicking the “Discontinue from Experiment” link in the footer on the Yahoo! Research Small World Experiment website, or by contacting Sharad Goel (smallworld-experiment@yahoo-inc.com). Deletion of the Experiment App alone will not delete your participation and our chain of events will still contain your profile and any other information viewable by others (based on your Facebook privacy settings).
You do not need to be signed-in to the Yahoo! network to access this project, however you must be signed in to Facebook.
Information Collection Practices
- Sender:
- Senders may terminate participation in the Project by deleting the Small World application from your Facebook privacy settings AND by clicking the “Discontinue from Experiment” link in the footer on the Yahoo! Research Small World Experiment website, or by contacting Sharad Goel (smallworld-experiment@yahoo-inc.com). Deletion of the Experiment App alone will not delete your participation and our chain of events will still contain your profile and any other information viewable by others (based on your Facebook privacy settings).
- We request permission and collect the following information through Facebook:
- Basic information, including name, profile picture, gender, networks, user ID, list of friends, and any other information shared through Facebook.
- Profile information including Birthday, Education History and Work History.
- Family and relationship information, including family members and relationship status.
- When you identify a potential Sender, we ask for additional, voluntary, personal information about your background. This information is not shared with other participants.
- When you identify a potential Sender, we also ask for additional, voluntary information about your relationship to the next Sender (or Target) including how you know them and the strength of your relationship. This information is not shared with other participants.
- Information may be retained in a personally identifiable manner for up to 24 months.
- Target:
- Targets may terminate participation in the Project by deleting the Small World application from your Facebook privacy settings AND by clicking the “Discontinue from Experiment” link in the footer on the Yahoo! Research Small World Experiment website, or by contacting Sharad Goel (smallworld-experiment@yahoo-inc.com). Deletion of the Experiment App alone will not delete your participation and our chain of events will still contain your profile and any other information viewable by others (based on your Facebook privacy settings).
- All Target information provided may become public.
- Targets will be asked to provide as much detailed information as possible when registering for the Experiment.
- Neither Yahoo!, Third Parties, nor the Target may be able to control the dissemination of Target information as a result of your participation in the Experiment.
- Information may be retained in a personally identifiable manner for up to 24 months from the end of the experiment.
Information Sharing and Disclosure
- Sender:
- Senders may terminate participation in the Project by deleting the Small World application from your Facebook privacy settings AND by clicking the “Discontinue from Experiment” link in the footer on the Yahoo! Research Small World Experiment website, or by contacting Sharad Goel (smallworld-experiment@yahoo-inc.com). Deletion of the Experiment App alone will not delete your participation and our chain of events will still contain your profile and any other information viewable by others (based on your Facebook privacy settings).
- Your Facebook information may or may not be visible to other Senders and Targets in your chain, based upon your Facebook profile settings.
- Information shared with the Yahoo! Small World Experiment outside of your Facebook settings is never shared publicly.
- Target:
- Targets may terminate participation in the Project by deleting the Small World application from your Facebook privacy settings AND by clicking the “Discontinue from Experiment” link in the footer on the Yahoo! Research Small World Experiment website, or by contacting Sharad Goel (smallworld-experiment@yahoo-inc.com). Deletion of the Experiment App alone will not delete your participation and our chain of events will still contain your profile and any other information viewable by others (based on your Facebook privacy settings).
- All Target information provided may become public though distribution of the App and use of the App by other persons.
- Your information will be available to other participants in the Experiment. You may not limit the people who have access to the information provided.
Your Ability to Update or Delete Information
